Accreditation Examination, 2009

The Board of Accreditation wishes to announce that the coming Accreditation Examination has been scheduled in September 2009. Candidates will be notified the exact date in due course. The Board of Accreditation has resolved to revise the examination requirements in the 15th meeting of the Board of Accreditation held on Thursday, 4 December 2003.

  1. The intending candidates should satisfy the following requirements before his/her admission to the examination:

    1. The candidate should be a member of the Hong Kong Society of Clinical Chemistry holding a relevant degree,

    2. The candidate should possess not less than 3 years of relevant experience in Clinical Biochemistry. Certification from the candidate's department head or advisor on his/her experience is required. Other forms of professional competence may be considered (e.g. published work).

  2. Copies of the application form for examination are available from the Registrar. Completed application forms for examination together with all supporting documents should reach the Registrar before 15 July 2009. The application fee for examination is $200 (cheque should be made payable to Hong Kong Society of Clinical Chemistry). Applicants admitted to the examination are required to pay an examination fee of $1,800.

  3. Please refer to the attached "Invitation to Apply to the Register of Accredited Clinical Biochemists in Hong Kong" and contact the Registrar for further details concerning the examination.

Invitation to Apply for Admission to the Register of Accredited Clinical Biochemists in Hong Kong

On the recommendation of the Secretary for Health and Welfare, the Hong Kong Society of Clinical Chemistry has formally appointed the Board of Accreditation in early 1993 with the objective of providing a mechanism for regulating standards pertaining to the professional practice of Clinical Biochemistry in Hong Kong. Up to now, the Board has admitted 24 members to the Register by examination or by exemption from all or part of the Accreditation Examination. According to the Articles of Association of HKSCC, Accredited Clinical Biochemists are eligible to apply to be promoted to the class of Fellow Membership of the Society. This is a new class of members formed by the HKSCC in 1999 in recognition of the professional status of those who are accredited by the Board of Accreditation of the Society. The Register of Accredited Clinical Biochemists will be updated and lodged with the Health and Welfare Branch annually.

To assist members in their applications, the Board of Accreditation has resolved that members possessing the following qualifications and experience may be exempted from all or part of the Accreditation Examination. (The format of the Accreditation Examination is consisted of two written papers - paper I (clinical) and paper II (scientific/technical), subject to passing the written papers the candidate will be invited to sit for a viva examination.)

Full exemption:

  1. Member or Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists (UK), or Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia, or Fellow of the Hong Kong College of Pathologists, and having passed the examination of respective College in Chemical Pathology; OR
  2. Holder of Mastership in Clinical Biochemistry, UK; OR
  3. Fellow of the Australian Association of Clinical Biochemists (FAACB); Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Clinical Biochemistry (FCACB); Diplomate of American Board of Clinical Chemists (DABCC); OR
  4. Member of the Australian Association of Clinical Biochemists (MAACB) with a doctoral degree obtained in a relevant field.

Partial exemption: Viva examination only

  1. Member of the Australian Association of Clinical Biochemists (MAACB); OR
  2. Holder of a doctoral degree in the field of Clinical Biochemistry or related discipline and having practised in Clinical Biochemistry for a period of not less than ten years; OR
  3. Having demonstrated competence through published work or other attainment and having practised in Clinical Biochemistry for a period of not less than ten years.

Partial exemption: One written paper plus viva examination

  1. Holder of a master degree in the field of Clinical Biochemistry or related discipline and having practiced in Clinical Biochemistry for a period of not less than two years.

    Decisions of the Board regarding granting of exemption from accreditation examination not listed above

    The Board has the right to consider on individual cases that are not covered in the above list and its decisions shall be final.

A copy of the application form for examination/exemption can be obtained from the Registrar. Completed application forms for examination/exemption together with all supporting documents should reach the Registrar before 1 July 2008. The application fee is HK$200 (payable to the Hong Kong Society of Clinical Chemistry). Successful candidates (by exemption) will be required to pay the examination fee of HK$1800.
